Info on heat treatment test on LEGO elements _________________________________________________ For a diashow on these slides please visit YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNstZ9gTsjw Test originally performed at Technical University of Braunschweig TUBS on July 23rd 2002. Pictures resorted and partly commented on June 16th 2013. Temperature increased by approx. 2°C per minute. (= 3.8 °K / min). Key Results: LEGO is totally destroyed, when 80°C are exceeded (valid for all typical elements, that are made of ABS). CA-bricks and Technic-crossaxles can withstand even slightly/evidently higher temperatures up to 120 ... 150°C. However - that is just according integrity of bricks in short time tests. - A TEMPERATURE LIMIT OF 45°C IS RECOMMENDED! - LEGO toys may be washed at 40°C. - be careful with dishwashers: they may offer washing programs with 40°C but they dry at > 80°C! - LEGO bricks from < 1963 may be made from CA ("Cellulose Acetat"). This deforms under influence of water. Do not wash unless strictly needed. Use cold water and no soap but a brush.
