When I first saw this set 8462 in 1999 or 2000 just after my dark ages, i didn't like it because of its curved design and modern technical elements. I recently bought a couple of them for the two pneumatic air tanks, and, of course, I built it. I was surprised by the sturdy and solid design: the chassis is very stiff and the model gives "and good fell" in my hands. Compared with the 8436 towing car setup it's got the stronger/more powerful lifting mechanism. I found, that there is plenty of unused space inside the trucks frame. Especially below the drivers cabin seemed to be more than enough space to put in a 6-cylinder engine without too much effort - only a few of the black technic bricks had to be removed but the overall look remains the same. In the rear there is sufficient space to give the model a basic suspension for the two axles. I chose to let only one of them drive the motor. Here it is more easy to use the old differential because the drive train is less complex. This simple setup consists of some modern technic connectors and liftarms. Although shock absorbers with weak spring from e.g. set 8845 have been used, the suspension is very stiff and doesn't bend much. On a flat surface, there is only little ground contact for the rear/third axle. I also replaced the aluminum style wheels by the more moderate ones from the dump truck 8479 and I think the model looks much better this way.
