McLaren MP4-20 F-1 Racer ------------------------------------------ This is a MOC by RoscoPC (http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=142116). After reading his excellent tutorial on modeling F-1 cars, I asked him about this one as it was a topic I had previously attempted to render. He was nice enough to share his MPD file. Note that I have not actually built this model in the real world, so I can't comment greatly on it's function. Although the parts don't exist in real life, I wanted to model the Technic panels in chrome like the real car. Small areas of chrome are easy enough, but very large areas of chrome cause all sorts of problems in POV-Ray. There is simply too much reflection and light. You get a lot of anti-aliasing artifacts and a lot of blinding reflections you weren't expecting. I've also noticed that HDR lighting seems to not work well with lots of chrome. I think you end up seeing the granularity of the original HDR light probe in the reflections. So I ended up taking two different approaches. In both renders I used the same strong frontal perspective with a mild focal blur on the front end. In the first render, I used radiosity with a plain white sky sphere and a white floor. In the second, I used radiosity with HDR lighting using the light probe of St. Peter's cathedral from debevec.org. This gave me a nice sunset effect. To help with the blazing reflectivity, I replaced the default chrome color with a darker version. I like these renders quite a bit, but I've still never managed to get rid of the faceting on the tires. Mesh Enhancer doesn't seem to do it, and there is no LGEO version. - Blakbird 2009
