Siren On the road to madness, I have encountered many things of great disturbance to the mind. I have witnessed cyclopean creatures, giant arachnoids, and things… things that defy earthly anatomy. I thought I had seen them all, those hideous black tentacled masses, and their ever so luminescent yet cold eyes that would stare right though you. I was wrong, for I have seen (if that is even the correct sensory term) the truly horrific grandeur of the Siren. Nothing would have prepared me to face the insanity of the nightmare. In the dark landscape I wandered. I know not how I got there, or where I was going. Beneath my feet I felt the rolling hills that tumbled into infinity, yet I see nothing but the encroaching blackness of night. The sun had died eons ago into the horizon, but suddenly I felt a rush of cool air pass through my body. And as I turned to face the direction of that gust of demon wind, I saw surmounting the blackest hill the towering silhouette of an amazing structure. The tower gave off an eerie glow, and like a ship lost at sea I was naturally drawn to the grace of the saving light. As I climbed the steep slope I grew wearier, but instead the hill stubbornly raised its incline. I was determined to reach the light, for I cannot fall back into the terrible darkness below. I climbed towards the heavens with my feet, and eventually with my hands. As I triumphed over the last ledge, I limped on the ground at the feet of the great giant. I counted three massive legs and a body nesting on the apex. There were no means of getting to the top of the structure. I had stood at the tallest ground underneath my failed triumph. The dark landscape spread mockingly beneath my sight, and my optimism in the light slowly dimmed and faded until a most horrible revelation rammed the spear of insanity into the heart of my last hope for salvation. A crank of machinery and the sound of slithering snakes awakened me into unnerving alertness. The ground trembled with the fury of an earthquake. And in my panic I caught the movement of a pillar of the tripod that was earlier planted so firmly into the ground. I feared for the collapse of the structure that towered above me, but as I looked up, my eyes beheld the sickening horror of the one thing I knew and loathed too well – those black tentacles of death. And that light… that was no light! It was the bloated fungoid eye of the hideous horror that spawned to life before me! At that moment I would have wished for death rather than to linger in my insignificance and suffer from the insanity induced by the horror. But Fate had cruelly granted me the latter, for the creature steered off in its monstrous strides down into the darkness below. And although I was spared of my meager life, my sanity died. Into the distance I saw lights on the summit of every black hill, lights that slowly moved in one direction towards one destiny. I know not what lies beyond the black hills, but I know that the Sirens are coming. Slowly but surely, these biomechanical horrors will one day reach where they were programmed to be. As I lay helpless on the zenith of this dark world amidst the myriad of migrating lights, I cannot but fear the demise of civilization. I have been sacrificed into the dark realm as a messenger, and this message I have left on the leg of a Siren. If you are reading it… I could only pray…
