The Beta Montecarlo originated as Pininfarinas submission to FIAT for a mid-engined replacement for the 124 Sport Coupe. Bertones X1-9 was instead chose. The more expensive project was then developed to the 2.0 DOHC Montecarlo, the basis for the 037 Racer
